Kahuku Ranch, on the vast shoulders of Mauna Loa Volcano, was one of the biggest cattle ranches in Hawaiʻi for 150 years. This 116,000-acre diverse landscape became part of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park in 2003. As the land heals from hooved animals, park staff celebrate miraculous pockets of biodiversity tucked into places cattle couldn't reach and support the return of the native forest. Hiking trails wind up grassy cinder cone hills or meander between stands of endemic ʻōhiʻa trees.
