Mauna Loa, which means "Long Mountain" because of its long, gently sloping shape, is the largest volcano on our planet. With over 30 eruptions since 1843, it is also one of the most active. Thanks to the efforts of Lorrin Thurston and Dr. Thomas A. Jaggar, present-day Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park became part of Hawaii National Park in 1916, and is now an International Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site.
