Haleakalā means "House of the Sun". It was here at the volcanoʻs summit that the demigod Māui snared the rays of the rising sun until it promised to cross the sky more slowly. People still travel to the summit of this volcano to experience the moods of the mountain as the sun journeys across the sky.

Established in 1916, the national park preserves the outstanding volcanic landscape of the upper slopes of Haleakalā volcano in the island of Māui. The park also protects the unique and fragile ecosystems of Kīpahulu Valley, the scenic pools of ʻŌheʻo Gulch, and many rare and endangered species.
