The feathers of the ʻapapane were once used to adorn the chiefly cloaks, helmets, and feather lei. The bright red feathers were only collected from the adult ʻapapane, which are found in small groups foraging actively through treetops of ʻōhiʻa lehua, hopping from flower to flower consuming the nectar from each flower and pollinating it at the same time. The bird is considered to be an active singer. The ʻōhiʻa lehua tree is a native forest tree. It has a beautiful shaving brush-type red flower. Today there are an estimated 3,000 ʻapapane in Hawaiʻi.
