Kīlauea has had the distinction of having had two simultaneous lava lakes until 2018: one in the Halemaʻumaʻu vent cavity in the summit caldera, and another within the Puʻuʻōʻō cone on the east rift zone of the volcano. The life cycle of this volcano is measured in 1000s of years, with lava lakes appearing and then draining away, sometimes during eruptions.
