But that's not to say that I didn't get something out of it-- I certainly did!!Although I am not a teacher, I read this book just to find out more about PLC (Professional Learning Community) -- and I was VERY impressed by the structure, the style of delivery, the step by step orientation of the reader to PLC, and the follow through.PLC- IMHO, is a terrific way for any teacher involved in this program to be able to reach their students with more clarity, discipline and structure. In fact the first thing I thought of, as the end (and middle) product of a PLC IS the ability to motivate and reach students with more clarity and to engender enthusiasm, and pride in learning, in those students.Dana and Hoppey plainly lay out the PLC Direction, even stressing the passion which should be inherent and reinforced in the teacher, which should then be passed on to the students. The PLC Book stresses that not only should the teachers be involved, but they should involve other personnel who are not teachers by making better use of the adults in the building (page 23) -- and also instituting "specialist days" for the students, which frees up the teachers to meet (also page 23)."PLC Guiding Questions" (p 50) and "Sentence Completion Activity" (one example of which is on p 63) bring structure and coherence to this ongoing process."The Story of Chris" (p 64) is a close-look narrative of a PLC meeting, which draws the reader's attention into the narrative, Q&A, and problem resolution activities.I wish the Powerpoint presentation at the end of this book had used a larger typeface, but that can easily be remedied by enlarging it on a copier. How did this book affect me? Even though I am not an instructor? WOW!! I learned something new. Something very powerful in the Education world. And I am VERY impressed at how there is a great deal of structure, as well as resources -- to the PLC process. I would hope that this process becomes popular -- and nation-wide, because Students (and not just teachers) WILL benefit and when that happens , everyone benefits.
