ʻŌhiʻa Lehua
Metrosideros polymorpha
ʻŌhiʻa lehua is a significant flowering evergreen tree endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and one of the most important woods in Hawaiian culture.
Their stunning flowers come in a range of colors from red to yellow, orange to white. The yellow blossoms are locally called "mamo". 'Ōhi'a trees are usually one of the first plants to grow on fresh lava flows and rejuvenate the landscape.
These iconic trees are seriously threatened by a fungus causing Rapid 'Ōhi'a Death (ROD). Some endemic birds and insects which rely on 'ōhi'a forests have become endangered or vulnerable due to shrinking forest areas.
