Golden dawn lights gilds the foamy mouth of Palikea stream, where fresh water that began as rain in high clouds forests joins the sea between arms of columnar basaltic lava. Acquired by the park in 1969, the Kīpahulu coastal lands extended the park from 10,023 feet to sea level. Lava flows on this eastern side of Maui are some of the last to have been deposited by Haleakalā volcano.
