This scene of the village life at what is now Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park, painted for the national parks by artist John Dawson, shows daily life in West Hawaiʻi before Europeans contact in the late 1700s. Hawaiians, then and now, believe that one must mālama (care for, protect, honor) the land, fresh water, and oceans, so that they continue to sustain us. They were careful to be pono (balanced), and we must continue this practice.
