ʻAʻaliʻi (Dondonaea viscosa)
ʻAʻaliʻi is indigenous to the Hawaiian islands. It was considered sacred to Laka, the goddess of hula & the forest. Hawaiians prepared a medicine using the leaves to treat conditions of the skin, and rheumatism. The dense hard wood of mature trees was used as timber for Hawaiian hale (houses), and also to make tools. Seed capsules were, and still are, used to create some of the most beautiful lei in hula performances.
