Kaloko fishpond was known to be a royal fishpond in ancient times. There was a kapu (law) placed upon it that forbade the taking of fish by anyone not of chiefly rank. The fishpond style is a loko kaupā, (walled pond) and encloses 11 acres of water. The pond is a natural embayment separated from the ocean by a massive seawall measuring over 8-10 feet high and 35 feet wide.
