Until the early 1800's, Hale o Keawe housed the bones of 23 paramount chiefs, watched over by carved images of significant Hawaiian gods. It is believed that the mana (spiritual power) inherited by the aliʻi (royalty) remained in their bones, even after death. Placing their remains here provided additional protection to the adjacent puʻuhonua, or place of refuge and renewel.
