In 1816, while still under the Hawaiian religious kapu system, Kamehameha the Great commissioned a flag with a Union Jack and eight alternating white, red and blue stripes, to be the national flag of Hawaiʻi. The eight stripes represent the eight major islands, while the Union Jack suggests the symbols of a puela- a triangular kāhili standard laying across two crossed spears, called ālia.
