The ʻamaʻu fern grows up to about three feet tall in shady Hawaiian forests like those protected at Hawaiʻi national parks. Tiny spores blow into cracks and up against plant debris. Brand new fronds emerge red, then fade to green. The summit crater name at Kīlauea Volcano, Halemaʻumaʻu, means "house of the ʻamaʻu fern" because the surrounding area is lush with them.
