The Kīlauea Iki Trail descends 400 feet from the crater rim through tree fern forest to the shiny black crater floor. Hikers cross the cracked, still-steaming lava plain and pass the gaping throat of the vent that, during the eruption of 1959, built Puʻupuaʻi cinder cone at the base of a 1900ft. lava fountain. Here, White-tailed tropicbirds, seabirds, often ride the wind currents and nest in the cliff wall.
